Kushiel's Debut: Setting

The setting for this game is the world of Jacqueline Carey's Kushiel's Legacy series of novels, and its companion Naamah's Trilogy. It is reminiscent of the real world, with many similarities between the cultures of that world, and past cultures of our own, primarily from an unspecified time in the late medieval/early renaissance eras. If at all possible, it is highly suggested that you read at least the first novel in the Kushiel's Legacy series, Kushiel's Dart, before playing. The more you read, the better your understanding of the world will be in general, but it is not necessary to read them all in order to join us in enjoying the world in game.

With such a large series (nine books plus at least one short story), there are gaps to be filled when converting it to a game world, and there will be things overlooked or changed slightly for the sake of making things playable. This section is your guide to our game's official take on the setting, and if you have questions about things we have not defined yet, or things that seem different between here and the books (the first two trilogies of which ended approximately 200 years prior to our game's events), please ask Staff. In addition, this wiki does not update often enough to keep up with current events in the game. Your best source for this is interacting with Staff and other player characters.

More specifically, the focus of the game is events in the city of Elua, the capital of the realm of Terre d'Ange, the same realm on which most of the novels center their events. It is the seat of the monarchy, and where most of the political intrigue of the country takes place due to the presence there of Parliament. Further, it is the home of the Court of Night-Blooming Flowers, or the Night Court for short, where the beautiful servants of Naamah hone and practice the arts of the courtesan, providing an outlet for the tastes of the nobles and dignitaries who spend so much time in the city.
